And according to spell check, uncreative isn't a word.
Anyway, I'm really happy with how this turned out! Some of the shading looks a little weird just because I don't have the foggiest clue what I'm doing when it comes to cartoon-style art. But considering this is my first attempt, I like to think it's not too shabby! It was definitely a lot of fun to work on, and it has actually been pretty helpful in terms of visualizing all my characters' heights relative to each other. I was inspired to do this piece when I found the blank height chart [link] that ~swiftgold made. I had to extend it a bit in order to fit all four characters.
For anybody who is unfamiliar with this group, these are the main characters from a story I've been writing for eternity that takes place within the Star Wars universe. They're members of a species I created from the planet Haphez, and yes they really are supposed to be that tall. I usually subtract 5 or 6 inches from their heights to get the human equivalent. For example, Ziva is depicted as being 6'5" (or the metric equivalent) but she is viewed in the Haphezian society the way we would view someone who is 5'11" or 6', so she's pretty tall for a woman but it's obviously not unheard of. And even though Zinni is fairly tall by human standards, she's actually pretty tiny.
They look like they're about to cause some trouble
This ended up not taking too long - the simpler style made coloring a lot easier. The initial lineart and choosing of poses and whatnot probably took the longest. I ended up with 54 layers total
I love how you can glean miles from their personality just by their posture in this picture (though Ziva seems a lot more amiable than I would expect XD)
lol Originally instead of having her arms crossed, I wanted to have it so she was resting her left elbow in her right hand and then had her left hand up on her face somehow (i.e. chin resting on hand or something). I would have then messed with her eyebrows a bit and it would have given her a very calculating look You can kinda see that original idea in the "Complete Reference" I included in the description. But then, since I suck at hands anyway and didn't want to put a lot of detail into them, I thought that would end up making everything more complicated. Plus, when I Googled something like "woman with arms crossed" to look for new ideas, that pose I found worked really well since the texture of the shirt was similar to what I wanted. Plus, if she was gonna have her arms crossed too, I wanted it to look different than Skeet's pose.
Haha wow I'm writing you a book containing all my trains of thought But yeah, she probably did end up looking a little more pleasant than usual (not that she's not capable of ever looking pleasant ) but at the same time I think the finished product shows kind of a subtle sassiness and a I-will-have-none-of-your-crap attitude. But yeah, it was super fun to come up with poses that I thought fit everyone. The one I chose for Zinni is actually the same one I always use for my concept sketches, but I rotated it a bit (because apparently you can do that with the Posemaniacs poses and I didn't even know as;ldjja;fkfdsl ) and it gave it a whole new look!
LOL! It's okay, I like hearing how people do things when they draw or whatever.
And oh wow, I just looked at the complete reference link, and that looks pretty helpful. And also kind of creepy, with those pasted on heads and muscles everywhere.
